About Fibreglass Matting & buying advice

Shop fibreglass chopped strand mat in 300g, 450g and 600g weights for GRP flat roof lamination, plus woven fibreglass reinforcement tape for joints and perimeter details. Available in cut rolls and individual metre lengths.

Buying guide

Choose Fibreglass Roofing Matting for adding fibreglass reinforcement for GRP roofing, repairs or detailing work.

Good choice when

  • Use this category for adding fibreglass reinforcement for GRP roofing, repairs or detailing work.
  • Use it when the surface is GRP roofing systems and prepared flat roof details.
  • Use it when the measurements, preparation work and related accessories have been checked.

Consider another route when

  • Do not use this category when you need a complete roof kit with resin, topcoat and trims included.
  • Do not use it when the roof is unsafe or unsuitable without preparation.
  • Do not use it as a shortcut if another CRS system is a better fit.

Next step: Choose the matting weight or tape size to match the roof system and repair detail.

Why Matting Weight Matters

Chopped strand mat is the structural core of a GRP laminate. The weight per square metre directly determines the thickness and strength of the cured roof. A 300g laminate is physically thinner and lighter than a 450g laminate — it suits small light-use roofs but is not strong enough for a garage or extension where thermal movement, foot traffic during maintenance and long-term performance demand a 450g or heavier laminate. Using 300g mat on a garage roof because it is cheaper is a false economy that typically results in cracking and early failure.

Woven Tape For Joints and Perimeters

In addition to chopped strand mat for the main roof surface, woven fibreglass reinforcement tape is used at specific positions — board joints, trim junctions, internal corners and the base of upstands. Tape provides concentrated reinforcement at movement-prone details where the main mat alone does not give enough support. It is applied before the main mat layer and saturated with the same roofing resin.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which matting weight my GRP kit uses?

The kit description will specify 300g, 450g or 600g matting. Match the mat you buy here to that specification exactly. The kit resin quantities are calculated for the specified mat weight.

Can I substitute lighter matting if the correct weight is not available?

No. Using lighter matting than specified produces a thinner laminate that will not meet the intended strength or durability. Always use the specified matting weight.

What is woven fibreglass tape used for?

Woven fibreglass reinforcement tape is used at roof board joints, the base of upstands, corner details and trim junctions — positions where concentrated reinforcement is needed before the main mat layer is applied.

How much matting do I need per square metre of roof?

One layer of mat is used for most domestic GRP roofs, so the mat quantity matches the roof area plus a waste allowance for cuts and overlaps at the edges. Two-layer builds require double the mat quantity.

Can I buy fibreglass matting in small quantities?

Yes. Chopped strand mat is available in individual metre lengths as well as full rolls, so you can buy the quantity needed for a specific area without committing to a full roll.
